Peru’s Inca Trail ‘one of the world’s best treks’

Cusco.- Gap year travellers visiting Peru can embark on one of the best treks in the world – the classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.

In an article for the online travel guide BootsnAll, writer Adam Seper said the Incas took the very same route to the sacred city over 500 years ago.

"Many of the same steps along the trail remain, along with a plethora of other ruins," he remarked.

Mr Seper claimed that the highlight of the journey is the Sun Gate, where hikers catch their first glimpse of Machu Picchu as the sun rises.

"Walking through the Sun Gate and glimpsing the infamous Lost City of the Incas was one of the most powerful moments of my life," he insisted.

The writer recommended booking a place on an Inca Trail tour with a reputable company well in advance to avoid disappointment, i-to-i.com reports.

He also advised travellers to purchase suitable hiking gear, including trekking poles if possible.

Peru's gastronomy key factor for tourists, says USA Today

Lima.- Peru’s wonderful cuisine, once fairly unknown on the world stage, is now increasingly a reason for travel for tourists around the world, said USA Today in a special supplement on Peru.

“Some 42% of people who come to Peru have considered food as a factor in their decision to visit the country,” former Trade and Tourism Minister Martin Perez was quoted as saying by the daily.

Peru is in a process of internationalization of its cuisine but also of the development of domestic cuisine, with food festivals such as Mistura.

The government has recognized that Peru has huge untapped potential for tourism and for this reason it is promoting areas such as gastronomic tourism and ecotourism, said the US daily in an article titled Ancient Enchanment.

An increasingly renowned gastronomy and boutique hotels in some of Peru's most beautiful locations draw hundreds of thousands of visitors to the country.

One of those locations is Machu Picchu, once again open to visitors after heavy rains flooded the nearby town of  Aguas Calientes.

Peru has a great diversity of ecosystems including 84 of the planet’s 114 life zones. There is a remarkable variety of flora and fauna with over 1,730 bird species, 330 species of amphibians, 462 species of mammals, and over 25,000 plant species.

USA Today said that a growing number of companies now offer tours and hotels in the rainforest or among Peru’s traditional rural communities.

Exciting homegrown companies are abundant in Peru’s tourism sector, not least in the hotel industry.

Tourists to buy e-tickets for Cusco's archaeological sites

Cusco.- Tourists from around the globe who want to visit the archaeological monuments of Cusco will soon be able to purchase online tickets.

This new service aims to help visitors save time as they will not have to make long queues in the existing ticket offices and, according to local authorities, it also seeks to protect them from fraud.

“The idea is to implement a system similar to that of plane tickets. You buy your ticket online, print it at home, and enjoy your trip safely,” said the Director of Cusco’s National Institute of Culture (INC) Juan Garcia.

Garcia said that representatives of INC and Peruvian state bank Banco de la Nación (BN) "are fully focused on this project which is making good progress."

Peru plans new access routes to Machu Picchu

Lima.- Peru’s Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Martin Perez reported Tuesday that new routes of access to Machu Picchu will be created so that tourism sector can flourish without causing harm to the Inca citadel.

“It’s important to create two or three new routes for the entrance and exit of Machu Picchu, in order to have a sustainable management of tourism in one of the new seven wonders of the world,” stated Perez.

He explained that some tourists explore Machu Picchu in one hour, while others even go up to Huayna Picchu, which takes more than three hours.

The development of these alternate routes will represent a step forward in the preservation of monuments, as it is available in many places around world.

In addition, the minister considered feasible that the archaeological complex receives 2,500 tourists every day of the year without causing any trouble.

Peru Culture Minister joins push for Machu Picchu artifacts’ return

Lima.- Peru’s recently sworn-in Culture Minister Juan Ossio said his administration will use its best efforts to secure the return of Machu Picchu artifacts currently housed at Yale University in the United States.

He is presumed to choose the most adequate resources to ensure the repatriation of the aforementioned archaeological collection removed from the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu nearly 100 years ago and taken to the United States by Hiram Bingham.

Ossio is showing a lot of interest in this subject as he is convinced that cultural patrimony should be returned to the country of origin.

He is also convinced that adequate strategies are required for that purpose, as he told Andina news agency.

In fact, some supporters in the United States and Yale are hoping to reach a consensus approach on the matter, he added.

According to the minister, we need to find a solution that has no effect on ongoing collaborations with this academic center.
