1.- How do I get to Machu Picchu?
We mention two ways:
Walking: If you're physically fit and ambitious, you might
choose the longest and most challenging way to get to Machu
Picchu, which is by walking along the famous Inca Trail. This
28-mile (45km) hike takes you past villages, forests, valleys,
and mountains, and is an excellent way to taste the flavor of
the local culture. The Inca Trail hike takes about four days for
most travelers.
By Train and Bus: The train departs from two towns, one of this
is Poroy (15 minutes by bus from Cusco) to Aguas Calientes and
the second one
from Ollantaytambo (2 hours from Cusco by bus) to Aguas
Calientes. The train offers you different kinds of services
according to your needs (backpacker, Vistadome and Hiram
Bingham). When you arrive in Aguas Calientes, there are buses (USD
$7 each way) to drive you up to Machu Picchu citadel (15
minutes), or you may prefer to walk up to Machu Picchu (50
minutes).
2.- I heard about the “local” train. May I take it?
There is a local train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes,
but the authorities
reserve it only for residents of Cuzco, on presentation of an
identity document.
Tourists can´t take it.
3.- Who controls the tour, the entries and tickets in Machu
Picchu?
Machu Picchu is considered one of the best archeological places
in the world, for this reason the Peruvian government and the
local authorities “INC” (Instituto Nacional de Cultura) ensure
its integrity. The Peruvian government makes the rules, rates
and control the Machu Picchu access. All the travel agencies
must follow these rules and pay for tickets and entries to Machu
Picchu citadel. About the Train service, Peru Rail (www.perurail.com
) is one of the private train companies that offers its
services; our travel company schedules tours, buys tickets for
entry and transportation, makes reservations, offers guide
services, transfers and hotels.
4.- Could I take the guide service in Machu Picchu by my self?
Yes, there are two kinds of services. The first is the group
service (9 – 15 people) and the costs about USD $20.
The private service costs USD $70 approx.
5.- Are there access limit to Machu Picchu and train tickets?
Actually there are not access limit to Machu Picchu, many
travelers arrive to Machu Picchu by the famous Inca Trail,
alternative route treks like “Salcantay” or other treks, other
arrives by train and buses, there is a limit buying train
tickets (it depends on the capacity of the train wagons) and
many of these tickets are sold two weeks in advance, for this
reason our travel agency could reserve your train tickets more
than two weeks in advance.
6.- Which are the times to enter to Machu Picchu?
The access to Machu Picchu is open from 5:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.
seven days a week, Monday through Sunday, including holidays.
7.- Can I go alone to Machu Picchu without a travel service?
Yes, first you have to buy your train ticket in Peru rail
office, (consider that the train tickets are sold very quickly
and we recommend to buy it many days in advance). Peru rail (www.perurail.com
) offers different types of services (backpacker, vistadome and
Hiram Bingham) in different hours, after that when you arrive to
Aguas Calientes you could take the bus to Machu Picchu ( cost
about USD 7 each way) and pay your entry to see Machu Picchu (USD
$42), there are many hotel options if you want to spend the
night in Aguas Calientes.
8.- What is the best time to visit Machu Picchu?
The dry season, runs from mid-April through October. The tourist
season, when the area is crowded, runs from June through
August. Therefore, we prefer the shoulder seasons of April,
May, September, and October when the crowds are smaller and it
is still dry.
The rainy season is from December to May. There is likely to be
heavy rain for two to three hours every afternoon, as well as
the possibility of light showers that continue over a longer
period.
